Put that soda down! Drink water!!

It amazes me that Soda has slipped under that radar as an incredible health concern. Alchohol and cigarettes have rightfully placed warning labels on their products to give their users the knowledge of just how unhealthy using those products can be.

But what about soda? 4 grams of sugar equals one teaspoon of sugar. Did you know that a 12 oz can of soda has 39 grams of sugar? That is almost 10 teaspoons of sugar!!! Can you imagine if you were at dinner with someone and they ordered coffee with 10 teaspoons of sugar? You would think they were a little nuts, right? Well that is what so many people are regularly putting in their body - Often 2 or 3 sodas with a meal! And people wonder why our country suffers from chronic obesity and heart issues. If someone drinks three sodas per day and replaces those three sodas with water, that person would be eliminating 30 teaspoons of sugar per day! You can imagine the health effects that would have - weight loss, heart health, etc.

Another interesting fact about all this sugar intake is the relationship between sugar and cancer. Scientific evidence has shown that cancer helps feed the growth of cancer cells. Many health professionals have basically stated that cancer loves sugar. Soda may be, in fact, the biggest provider of sugar intake for most Americans.

I believe in the near future warning signs will be placed on soda cans so people can really evaluate what they are about to drink. Hopefully it will read something like this - Warning: This soda contains 10 teaspoons of sugar, consumption of which can lead to obesity, heart disease and childhood diabetes. Drink water!! Water replenishes the body without any negative health effects. No calories, no sugar! If you want to lose weight - drink water! You want to feel better, drink water! Take your health seriously and drink water!
